Breastfeeding On Demand or On Schedule?

  • Posted by

My wife believes strongly in breastfeeding on demand, but my parents think she’s spoiling our three-week old. Who’s right?

Your parents’ response to breastfeeding on demand is quite common but inappropriate. A three-week-old baby is incapable of being spoiled and can only benefit from learning that her needs will consistently be met.

You may not be able to change your parents’ view, but it is important to express to them that you agree with the mother’s decision to breastfeed whenever her child wishes. Your wife will appreciate your support and the fact that you and she are united in your decisions. By backing her up, you are creating a powerful parenting team that will serve the family well in the years to come. Chances are that eventually your parents will see that both of you made the right decision.
